A step-by-step approach to organising requirements, documents and deadlines while keeping every application accurate and genuinely yours.

A strong application is complete, accurate and connected to the programme's published requirements. Good preparation takes time because transcripts, references, language results and personal statements may involve other people or institutions. Start with the requirements for each programme rather than relying on one generic checklist.

Build a requirements tracker

For every programme, record the application route, deadline, entry criteria, required documents, formatting rules, submission method and any additional steps. Mark which items are complete, requested, in progress or awaiting confirmation. Add a personal target date earlier than the official deadline to create room for corrections, time-zone differences and unexpected delays.

  1. Confirm current instructions on the official programme page.
  2. Request transcripts, references and translations with enough lead time.
  3. Check names, dates and qualification details against original records.
  4. Review each file for legibility, completeness and the requested format.
  5. Save submission confirmations and track any outstanding action.

Make documents consistent

Use the same accurate account of your education and experience across application forms, CVs and statements. Explain gaps or unusual circumstances clearly when requested, and never alter grades, dates, certificates or referee details. If documents need translation or certification, follow the receiving institution's specific rules rather than assuming one format is accepted everywhere.

Prepare a programme-specific statement

A convincing statement answers why this subject, why this programme and why you are prepared to undertake it. Support your explanation with examples from study, work, projects or independent learning. Refer accurately to course features that matter to your plans; avoid generic praise, unsupported claims and copied language. Keep the final statement in your own voice and within the institution's stated length and format.

Coordinate references and tests

Ask referees early and provide the course context, submission instructions and deadline. Give them time to prepare an honest reference and confirm that their contact details are correct. If a language test or other assessment is required, check the accepted test, minimum conditions and result-submission process directly with the institution, then schedule with time for a possible retake if appropriate.

Review before submitting

Read the application once for substance and once for mechanics. Check that the selected course and intake are correct, every required field is answered, uploaded documents open properly, and the statement belongs to that programme. After submitting, retain the confirmation and monitor the official account and email for requests. Respond by the stated deadline and contact the admissions team if an instruction is unclear.
